Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
